Bill founded ‘ZEDfactory’ in 1999, a company focused on proving that step changes in carbon reduction can be achieved alongside improved quality of life. He completed the UK’s first zero fossil energy development in 2001 and is a co-authored the award-winning The ZEDbook published in 2008, a manual for achieving zero-carbon development at different densities and scales, as well as writing the more recent publication in 2018 called 'ZEDlife — How to build a low-carbon society today'. He has held visiting professorships at several academic institutions, won a Lafarge Holcim Gold Award in 2018 and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for services to sustainable housing design.
